Special issue on agroforestry for pig production

The journal, "Animals", recently launched a Special Issue on Agroforestry for pig production. This emphasises the broad international interest in integrated systems and is a great opportunity to compile research needed to develop the concept further.

Agroforestry is an integrated land-use concept with the simultaneous production of trees (or other woody vegetation) and crops or livestock. There is an increasing interest in integrating trees into specialized farming systems as a potential climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy. Trees in pig production is still limited but has a huge potential for improving animal welfare and reduce nutrient losses in pasture systems but new knowledge is needed on how to design and manage systems to reach the full potential of integrated concepts.

The well-recognised scientific open-access journal Animals recently launched a Special Issue on Agroforestry for pig production. This emphasises the broad international interest in integrated systems and is a great opportunity to compile research needed to develop the concept further. The guest editors Anne Grete Kongsted from Aarhus University in Denmark and Vicente Rodríguez-Estévez from University of Cordoba in Spain hope to receive both original research papers and reviews concerning a wide range of topics about integrated pig–tree systems and management to improve animal welfare and meat quality, while reducing ecological challenges related to outdoor pork production.

The special issue is open for submission of papers until 30 November 2021.
