Organic RDD research funds

Organic RDD stands for 'Organic Research, Development, and Demonstration Programme' and is a Danish research programme targeting organic food systems. It is coordinated by ICROFS in collaboration with GUDP (Green Development and Demonstration Programme).

GUDP (Green Development and Demonstration Programme) calls for applications for the Organic Research, Development, and Demonstration Programme, known as Organic RDD, through separate application rounds. The call for applications is carried out in collaboration with ICROFS (International Centre for Research in Organic Farming and Food Systems).

The GUDP Board, in accordance with the GUDP Act, seeks recommendations from the ICROFS Board regarding focus areas etc. in connection with specific organic research initiatives.

The projects aim to support innovative, business-oriented thinking in the Danish organic food industry through green transformation. They should promote both green and economic sustainability.

Focus areas you can apply within

The Organic RDD 12 programme supports projects that conduct research and develop and/or demonstrate business-oriented innovation within the Danish organic food sector, while also delivering public goods that contribute to protecting the climate, environment, biodiversity, animal welfare, and to rural development. Projects must support both environmental and economic sustainability, and ICROFS and GUDP emphasise scientific quality, novelty, impact, and relevance.

Projects must be based on a food systems approach, meaning they should be holistic, interdisciplinary, and involve relevant stakeholders such as companies, farmers, and other value-chain actors.

The focus areas in ICROFS’ Research and Development Strategy form the basis for the Organic RDD 12 call. The six focus areas are:

  • Circular Bioeconomy
  • Climate and Environment
  • Biodiversity
  • Health and Welfare
  • The Organic Consumer of the Future
  • Organic Farming – for a living

Project applications may address selected topics within one or more of these focus areas.

Two types of projects can receive funding

Funding is available for both projects with a business plan (type 1 projects) and projects focusing solely on public goods (type 2 projects). For type 2 projects, you may find inspiration in the knowledge synthesis The Contribution of Organic Farming to Public Goods, available at icrofs.dk under Publications.
